Preserving Heritage: Human Library in the Giunsani Valley (Corsica)
On May 9th, as part of the European Human Library / Erasmus+ Project, a second Human Library event was held at A Tornadia during an evening gathering with the inhabitants of the Giunsani Valley and surrounding villages. The event featured Khava, Jean Saladini, Santu Massiani, Jean-Marie Lacambre from Giunsani, and Michel Frassati from Île Rousse, each sharing stories that celebrated the intangible heritage of the Giunsani Valley and Corsica.
The evening was filled with captivating tales:
Santu narrated "The Evening Gatherings in the Villages," reflecting on the communal traditions.
Khava enchanted the audience with "Cappace and the Chestnuts," a tale rich with island humor and imagination.
Michel recounted "The Place of Children of Île Rousse," a childhood story about daily life on Pasquale Paoli Place, an open-air play area central to community life.
Jean-Marie, a rock music and electric guitar enthusiast, shared his unexpected journey with the mandolin.
The Human Library event concluded with a musical performance by Jean-Marie, who played a mandolin tune. This was followed by a polyphonic song led by Jean, Michel, and Santu, who taught the audience to sing the simple and unifying chorus of "Terra."
Additionally, Francine Olivi delighted attendees with her personal stories, "Carnaval or the Rebirth of a Village" and "I Went to School at Battaglini: School in the Village, an Extended Family." Jean Saladini also shared his story, "Gardens and Livestock: Family Food Production in the Village."
These stories are now available as audio books on Spotify through the podcast "Memoria per l'Avvene," created for the European Human Library/Erasmus+ Project. This podcast aims to preserve and promote the valley's intangible heritage by sharing the collected stories with a broader audience.
